John began working as a junior photographer with the South Yorkshire and Rotherham Advertiser in 1967.
In those days an apprenticeship took 5 years, but in 1971, John gained a "distinction",
one of only four awarded in the UK that year, in the newspaper industry’s training
programme the National Council for the Training of Journalists -
Working for a busy local weekly newspaper, he later became manager of the photographic department and continued in this post until 1977
when he left to join Whites Press Agency, in Sheffield. Here he provided press photography coverage for all the major UK tabloid and broadsheet newspapers, some European and American titles too. Commissions from the Mirror, Mail, Express, Sun, Star, Telegraph and their associated Sunday titles were a daily occurrence. During his years as a photojournalist, he provided news coverage at various historic events including the tragic disasters at Flixborough, Bradford and Hillsborough.
In the 1980’s John worked as a staff for News of the World and in the 1990’s on the set of Emmerdale, providing Yorkshire Television press releases images . The main focus of John's attention now, is supplying images for corporate businesses and PR companies throughout the UK.
